The annual Cong – Galway Sailing Race, Europe’s oldest and longest inland water sailing race, will take place this year on Saturday the 11th of June 2016 in conjunction with Galway Bay Sailing Club.
The race starts from Lisloughrey Pier in Cong, Co. Mayo early in the morning and makes it’s way down through Upper and Lower Lough Corrib to the finish line at Menlo Castle on the River Corrib that evening.
The participants in the race will make only one stop for lunch at Kilbeg Pier, approximately half way, where race timings will be taken. After a hearty lunch the sailors will leave Kilbeg continuing on to Galway where the race will finish at Menlo Castle on the River Corrib. A reception and prizegiving ceremony will be held shortly after at the Corrib Rowing & Yachting Club that evening.
All members are invited and encouraged to come along on the day to support your club and a cruise in company / boat trip will be organised to leave the CR & YC that morning to meet the race in Kilbeg. After lunch the flotilla of boats of all shapes and sizes will then accompany the racing sailors on the remainder of their journey down to Galway City that afternoon.
A fun and exciting day as always is practically guaranteed!
